Ways to Celebrate and Honor Veterans

The men and women who have served in our nation's armed forces carry a legacy of courage, sacrifice, and dedication. They have stood on the front lines, protected our freedoms, and contributed immensely to our society both during and after their service. Military burials are among the most solemn and significant ways to pay tribute to those who have served. These ceremonies, often including the folding of the flag, the playing of "Taps," and a rifle salute, are steeped in tradition and respect. Attending a military burial, whether for a family member, friend, or as a member of the public, is a powerful gesture of solidarity and gratitude.

Military funeral honors are precise and deeply symbolic. While the extent of the ceremony can vary based on the veteran's rank and status, certain core elements are cornerstones of the tradition. These rituals connect generations of service members and provide a powerful, unified expression of respect.

In addition to funeral honors, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides other burial benefits for eligible veterans. These can significantly ease the financial burden on families.

Burial in a National or State Veterans Cemetery: Eligible veterans, their spouses, and dependent children can be buried in one of the 155 national cemeteries at no cost to the family. This includes the gravesite, opening and closing of the grave, a grave liner, and perpetual care.

Headstone, Marker, or Medallion: The VA can provide a government headstone or marker for the unmarked grave of an eligible veteran in any cemetery worldwide. A medallion to be affixed to a private headstone is also available.

Burial Flag: The VA provides a U.S. flag to drape the casket or accompany the urn of a deceased veteran.

Presidential Memorial Certificate: This is an engraved paper certificate signed by the current president to honor the memory of the veteran.
